Blue Lotus is an ensemble of next generation entrepreneurs, designers, dyers, weavers, weaver organizations -who are fully engaged with and proud of being associated with traditional practices of handcrafting. It attempts to build new kinds of engagements between its diverse members and their collectives, in order to infuse generative energy into the quest for sustainability.
Purpose
The approach of this unconventional team is to focus on filling the gaps and constraints in languishing craft clusters, on investing in new markets for day-to-day base fabrics, and on new products for emergent markets. At its core, the Blue Lotus stands for the Indian crafts-persons’ daily quest for the elusive object of perfect beauty; that unattainable ideal that inspires all human endeavor.
People
Blue Lotus has been set up as an initiative for supporting grassroot & nexgen entrepreneurs, weavers, dyers and designers who are committed to working with handloom and traditional communities. Its been a little more than 4 years and they have so far supported five entrepreneurs in Andhra & Telengana , who work both independently or through Blue Lotus . Together they work with over 100 weavers and 25 handspinners.
Planet
They create natural dyed handwoven stoles using traditional techniques of plain weave, extra weft, and three shuttle techniques. Handweaving inherently has a low impact on the environment. Natural dyes further add to this low impact causing little or no damage to the environment.
