Craftizen Foundation was founded in 2014 with a vision to preserve and evolve Indian craft skills so that they remain an integral part of our cultural fabric. They have expertise in over 30 craft skills including wooden toy making, lacquer work, hand embroidery, folk painting, tailoring, hand-block and screen printing, kantha stitch, jewellery from bena grass with natural seeds and beads. They also have a strong environmental focus and work with a wide array of discards.
Purpose
Their vision is to preserve and evolve Indian craft and artisanal skills so that they remain an integral part of our cultural fabric. They also have a strong environmental focus and work with a wide array of discards such as Temple flowers, newspapers, silk thread discards and fabric leftovers to make unique and functional products. Craftizen has the aim to enable sustainable craft-based livelihoods for traditional artisans & marginalised communities including women from low income communities and adults with intellectual disability.
People
Through their programs, Craftizen has skilled over 3,500 beneficiaries in 25 livelihood centres across Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Lucknow. They have also supported over 300 traditional artisans with design and marketing support, and curated around 350 unique craft designs.
Planet
With the Green Skilling Program in Bangalore, their focus is on skill development and creating marketable products from discard materials such as Temple flowers and paper waste. Under this project, 1,500 beneficiaries from marginalised sections including adults with intellectual disability and low income women, who have no other sustainable sources of income are being trained and supported. They have recycled over 50,000 kilograms of flower waste over the past five years.
