Recycles resources
Purpose
After a journey of learning and unlearning, Dhatu has arrived at the purpose of “Dress to reform”. The concept where a product serves a purpose throughout its life. Careful sourcing of fabrics from weavers helps support the traditional Indian handloom culture and provenance, utilitarian styling combined with natural fabrics keeps the wearer at ease, and at the end of life, these materials are recyclable, compost friendly, and biodegradable. Quite simply taking from the earth and putting it back there. Dhātu embodies the ethos of sustainability both in terms of design and through its business practices.
People
Dhatu is focused on community-based development & responsible sourcing of traditional Indian handloom textiles. They work with handloom artisans. The simplicity of making fabric by hand that uses no electricity and generates livelihoods for an entire community. They use materials that not only do no harm but enrich the people and the environment. A weaving cluster of over 200+ looms in Tamil Nadu, India was hit by the low demand for their indigenous Kunbi sarees, rendering them out of business. They are working in collaboration with Save the Weave project to bring awareness and traction to this cluster.
Planet
Low impact handloom textiles help empower more than a million weaver families and demonstrate the priceless human value of making things by hand. Other raw materials are locally sourced. The brand has chosen to forego animal leather, synthetic fabrics, tree-based fibers, digital printing, and other industry techniques that have a high carbon footprint. All products are made at a fully compliant facility that follows fair-trade labor practices, human rights, and gender equality. Fabric and paper waste is collected and sent to recycling units. All packaging material is either recyclable or biodegradable. Dhatu avoids air shipping as much as possible and encourages buyers to choose a standard 3 to 5 days shipping period. The garments come with a smart wash care label to guide customers to increase the longevity of garments and save water and energy during the washing and drying process.
