Purpose
Digikargha was born out of Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF), an NGO with 1,000 digitally equipped centers across India. DEF works with weavers and artisans across the country, digitally empowering them so that they can diversify, market, and sell their products. Digikargha was formed to bridge the gap between the market and weaver and artisan communities. It aims to provide support to weavers and artisans and give them work so that they don’t have to look for other sources of income. Digikargha connects weavers and artisans with customers who value authentic products.
People
Digikargha works with weavers and artisans in 20 clusters across 15 states. These artisans and weavers are given regular orders so that they don’t need to abandon their profession. By supporting these weavers Digikargha aims to support arts that are slowly dying due to a variety of reasons. Along with giving them a platform to sell their products, Digikargha also provides them training in digital tools to empower them such that they can market and sell their products themselves. Digital skilling is also done to help them diversify and digitize their products. Block printing using digital methods is much more convenient and efficient and by providing them access to these techniques, training, and resources, Digikargha is able to help them increase their income and remain in the profession.
Planet
Digikargha, since its inception, has worked with handloom weavers, contributing to reducing the ecological footprint and helping sustainable fashion flourish in the urban market by collaborating with rural weavers. Digikargha also helps weavers and artisans design products that are eco-friendly; Smartpad is one such example. Smartpad is a reusable sanitary pad that is made available to people in rural India at an affordable price. Most villages don’t have a waste management system and so the single-use pads are an environmental hazard. Another initiative.
