Working for a cause, for a solution through ‘slow living and better fashion’ is reflected in IKRIIT’M’s work and philosophy. They commit to ethical and fair trade practices as well as transparency at every stage from fabric development to pricing. Ikriit’m means to work to give back; to work for what one is surrounded by, and for them, it is through sourcing locally and producing locally with natural fabric and no-toxic dyes and materials.
Purpose
Their purpose is to form a strong community of like-minded people who appreciate the story and values of the subtle details involved in the making of a product by hand. Clean and green fashion does not contribute to the waste that the fashion industry produces. IKRIIT’M has the long-term goal to employ and form a team of women who work to support themselves and their families.
People
IKRIIT’M has a team of three for the tailoring process and seven for hand spinning, weaving, and surface details. The ratio of male and female artisans is 4:6, they aim to uplift the women artisans from their local community by involving them in the process at every stage and ensuring they earn fair and equal wages for what they work for to be independent.
Planet
They work following Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. IKRIIT’M product story starts from the fabric development stage which is handwoven in Pilkhuwa, Uttar Pradesh, and the yarn is sourced from the hand spinners there. They use 100% hand-woven fabric that is made in small batches rather than created in bulk. The garments developed are on a made-to-order basis to avoid mass production. Every piece of scrap generated goes back to the chain of the production process to be used in form of patches, buttons, packaging material, and surface details.
