The Color Caravan was launched out of a small barsati home office in New Delhi in 2010. The idea was to preserve and promote the rich, beautiful, and often complex diversity of traditional Indian handmade craft products. The focus of The Color Caravan has been on reviving and sustaining livelihoods for highly skilled yet underpaid, underappreciated master artisans and craftspeople.

In 2016, The Color Caravan moved its operation to a village in the Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh and 'started from scratch.
