For approximately two generations—of which they are the third—their family has worked with Tariwalas to create looms. By combining strands made of silk, cotton, hemp, khadi, and other materials, our ancestors were able to preserve the archives of weaves and designs. Tariwalas have supported our business for decades, and now we want to support their craft. Here, many different weavers and dedicated laborers live in the city and the nearby towns. Every street in the city has been infused with the weaving, dying, and processing culture for many years. TARI – The Loom Story assisst their weavers by keeping them busy with imaginative and challenging weaving designs.
Purpose
In this world of fast fashion which has a huge impact on the environment, TARI wanted to bring back timeless fashion which was more sustainable and ethical. They hope to breathe new life into our traditional attire by creating timeless fashion. Tarisuits take a more deliberate and purposeful approach to clothing. At TARI, they only employ loom-based, yarn-dyed textiles, bringing out their weaving processes to produce designs with timeless patterns, textures, and colors. As a result of their ongoing efforts to create novel materials, they have developed their own weaves. At TARI, every piece of apparel has been developed from scratch, from designing of textiles until the pattern of the apparel including manufacturing processes.
People
The idea to conserve the Tariwalas of South India led to the name Tari, which means looms in Tamil. These loom fabrics are created by artisans known as Tariwalas who live in Tamil Nadu’s rural communities. TARI – The Loom Story brand inspires and encourages Tariwalas as they struggle to make ends meet and maintain the looms, keeping the craft alive.
Planet
Sustainable practices in the textile sector include using water-saving strategies and implementing non-toxic dyeing and finishing procedures. They only produce yarn-dyed textiles at TARI, which means that the method is significantly more environmentally friendly and causes less water pollution than producing printed cotton textiles. Additionally, as they exclusively utilize loom-based fabrics, every textile has a weave-based design, thus there is no printing involved. TARI employs a cloth bag made of their woven fabric as its packaging, which is 100% eco-friendly. This bag is made to be reusable and still serves a role after the clothing it holds has been worn out.
