Asan is a social venture with a mission to eradicate period poverty across the world. Working with engineers at the Harvard Innovation Lab, Asan designed an innovative menstrual cup that is extremely easy to use. Each Asan cup can be re-used for 10 years and averts over 2,500 sanitary pads from going to landfills. For every cup that is sold, Asan donates one for free to a woman or girl who cannot afford period products.
Purpose
Originally a Persian word, Asan is today used in many languages to mean easy or worry-free. Asan was founded on the belief that no one — wherever they are in the world — should ever have to worry about access to safe and high-quality period care. Asan exists for three reasons: to bring you the world’s best quality period care; to make products accessible to those who are most in need and to share responsibility for creating a greener planet.
People
It is estimated that half of all women and girls living in developing countries cannot afford access to any type of period product, and are forced to use rags, paper, and sand to manage their periods. These women suffer from recurrent reproductive and urinary tract infections and are forced to miss out on school and work. At Asan, the belief is that access to period care is a fundamental human right and that no one should ever have to miss out on work or school on their period. This is why for every menstrual cup you purchase, Asan donates one for free to a woman or girl in need. They work with some of the world’s most trusted NGOs and women’s cooperatives to distribute our product, provide training on how to use it, and spread awareness about menstrual health.
Planet
The plastic in pads, tampons, and applicators that you use today will still be sitting in landfills hundreds of years from now. Furthermore, pads and tampons must be manufactured again and again every month, which involves repeated electricity and water consumption All this waste can be averted by switching to the Asan cup. The Asan cup not only reduces landfill waste, but it also improves the health outcomes for those who have to manage our sanitary waste. In India, sanitary waste continues to be manually segregated by waste-pickers. Touching soiled pads and tampons exposes them to harmful bacteria and infections, such as e-Coli, salmonella, and much worse. At Asan, the commitment to sustainability goes beyond product. Their packaging is made from 95% recyclable material and our cloth pouch is made from 100% natural cotton rather than synthetic fabric. All their suppliers and vendors sign up for their official sustainability pledge.
