EWOK (Enabling Women of Kamand Valley), a not-for-profit society based in the Himalayan village of Kamand in Himachal Pradesh, has been empowering women, farmers, and their families across thirteen panchayats since 2016. Focused on grassroots entrepreneurship, it supports the cultivation and marketing of medicinal herbs, herbal infusions, aromatic oils, and walnuts, while also helping producers introduce innovative crops and access new markets. Additionally, it promotes food and handcrafted products that showcase the unique flavors and heritage of the Himalayan region, such as Rhododendron concentrates, indigenous pickles, and traditional grass footwear. Each product is enriched with traditional knowledge and packed with health benefits. By preserving cultural practices and fostering sustainable livelihoods, EWOK continues to transform lives and inspire local communities to achieve their goals and dreams.

Purpose

EWOK envisions empowering women and farmers in the remote, hilly district of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, by helping them establish services and small-scale industries that align with their skills and aspirations. Rooted in an agrarian economy with rain-fed plots and challenging terrain, the region faces issues like limited income opportunities and wildlife threats, which have driven many families to abandon their small fields. Studies by IIT Mandi in 2014 and 2018 revealed a strong desire among local women, many without formal education, to transform traditional skills into sustainable income sources. Recognizing these challenges and aspirations, EWOK has stepped in to support the community by creating pathways for income diversification and land utilization. Guided by values of sustainability and community development, the organization equips women and farmers with the tools and resources to unlock opportunities, fostering growth and resilience for them and their families.

People

Through targeted programs, this not-for-profit organization empowers women and farmer groups in the Kamand, Kataula, and Parashar valleys of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. By strengthening agricultural skills and supporting female entrepreneurship, it enables local communities to transition from subsistence farming to sustainable practices. Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) offer women the tools to enhance productivity and market access, while aspiring entrepreneurs receive mentorship to establish small businesses, breaking gender barriers and boosting family income. Additionally, young women gain confidence and employability through training in English and basic computer skills. Anchored by a dedicated resource center and a foundation of community trust, the initiative fosters financial independence and self-reliance among women and farmers. With its holistic approach, the organization is shaping a future of inclusive, long-term growth for these rural, mountainous communities.

This not-for-profit organization is making a significant impact on the environment by championing sustainable practices in the Kamand Valley and surrounding areas. By shifting the supply of medicinal plants from forest gathering to sustainable cultivation, it ensures the preservation of the Himalayan ecosystem. Farmers are mentored to follow strict compliance for the ethical cultivation and transport of herbs. Women in the community are encouraged to adopt eco-friendly business models, such as growing tulsi, marigolds, and roses for industries like herbal teas and natural products. Additionally, training programs teach women to create handicrafts from fallen pine needles, transforming a local nuisance into an economic opportunity while contributing to environmental conservation. Through these initiatives, the organization not only empowers local communities but also integrates sustainability into daily life, fostering a greener and more resilient future for the region and beyond.
