People
It is estimated that over 6 million artisans toil to preserve all the indigenous forms of handicrafts of India. This is an unorganized sector and artisan incomes tend to be erratic and low. Fairkraft’s mission is to bring in suitable interventions in the form of technology, process, and training that will enhance the quality and consistency of products made by them. This should help increase the value of the products and hence artisan incomes. They have introduced more women into the Channapatna craft cluster. They constantly strive for women’s empowerment and greater participation in the sector. Artisans and their families are also provided health care and social security benefits.Fairkraft facilitates artisans in organizing themselves in self-help groups and progress to become entrepreneurs.
Planet
The hale wood is procured from non-farm and non-forest land; it needs little water to grow. Since it grows naturally with no human care or intervention, no harmful chemicals get used. The trees are self-generating. Once a large branch is cut it regrows fully in 3 to 4 years, making it sustainable. There is optimum utilization of wood; all sections of the wood are used by the artisans as the product range involves small to large parts. The lac used is a naturally occurring resin. This is abundantly available in India and harvesting lac is a livelihood opportunity for people. The dyes used are all-natural products e.g. turmeric, indigo, etc. This makes the toys safe for children. The wood waste is used in the making of incense sticks (agarbattti) and mosquito coils.
