Folkstroke, a brand under Hasthkala Curators Pvt. Ltd., brings a fresh perspective to traditional Indian décor by blending two or more folk art forms into unique products tailored for modern homes. Launched in 2019 with a single artisan, Folkstroke has since grown into a thriving community of over 200 skilled artisans, hailing from some of India’s most economically disadvantaged and Naxal-affected districts across seven states. This remarkable growth is a testament to the brand’s commitment to preserving and promoting India’s rich cultural heritage while empowering tribal artisans. By fusing traditional artistry with contemporary design, Folkstroke creates décor pieces that resonate with global audiences, making it a brand that bridges the gap between ancient traditions and modern living spaces. With a vision to take this innovative fusion art to the world stage, Folkstroke continues to push the boundaries of creativity and craftsmanship.
Purpose
The decline in India's artisan population over the past five years, coupled with the rise of migrant labor in metropolitan cities, highlights an urgent need to revitalize traditional art and craft as a viable career path in rural communities. Folkstroke is determined to shift this narrative. As a brand deeply rooted in preserving and promoting India’s cultural heritage, Folkstroke aspires to inspire the next generation of artisans to see their traditional crafts as sources of pride and aspiration. By creating a thriving ecosystem where age-old art forms are not only preserved but celebrated, Folkstroke is making traditional craftsmanship a respected and rewarding profession. Through innovative fusion art and contemporary design, the brand seeks to elevate the status of rural artisans, ensuring that their skills are passed down with admiration and awe, and that these communities flourish with sustainable livelihoods that honor their rich cultural legacy.
People
Folkstroke is dedicated to empowering traditional tribal folk artists across eight of India’s most economically challenged and Naxal-affected districts. By designing each product in-house, Folkstroke ensures that every piece carries a unique blend of tradition and innovation. The designs are then shared with artisans in their respective villages, where they bring these creations to life. Once completed, the products are gathered and brought to Folkstroke's head office in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, where the final assembly and finishing take place before being shipped to clients. Folkstroke is committed to fair wages, and this approach has resulted in a remarkable 38% increase in the income levels of its artisans. With a zero-attrition rate, the brand has built a strong and loyal community of artists who are not only preserving their cultural heritage but also thriving economically, making Folkstroke a beacon of sustainable craftsmanship.
Planet
Folkstroke is deeply committed to environmental stewardship and the safety of its products. With a focus on sustainability, the brand uses only food-grade, non-toxic lacquer on all its creations, ensuring they are child-safe and eco-friendly. In line with its planet-conscious values, Folkstroke avoids the use of MDF, choosing instead to craft all products from legally sourced mango wood. This choice not only supports responsible forestry practices but also enhances the durability and quality of the products. By adhering to these ethical standards, Folkstroke creates décor pieces that are not only beautiful and unique but also safe for homes and kind to the environment. The brand’s commitment to sustainability reflects its broader mission of harmonizing traditional craftsmanship with modern, eco-conscious living, making every Folkstroke product a responsible and thoughtful addition to any space.
