Nandini Studio is a women’s apparel and accessories brand that is inspired by intricacies of handwork. It is a homegrown brand in India. They create apparel that has an artisanal touch by way of embroidery hand crochet or hand painting. They employ local craftsmen to make our products. The stitching is done by men while all the handwork is done by women. The women work from the comforts of their home and come from marginalized sections of society.
Purpose
They started as a label manufacturing clothing with handwoven fabrics with a touch of beadwork and crochet appliques. They work to promote hand techniques with a special focus on protecting the dying art of crochet.
People
They currently work with 2 clusters in West Bengal for the fabrics. There are 3 women and 1 man who works with them locally on handcrafted accessories. At the studio, they have 3 men and 2 women working for making the clothing range.
Planet
They work with handwoven fabrics – mostly cotton and silk. The leftover fabrics are sent to an organization that helps to create woven dhurries from the same. The beaded accessories are made from surplus beads at embroidery workshops.
They try to make sure that they utilize the complete balls of thread in the hand crafted accessories ensuring minimum waste.
