Sahana Reed & Leather Handwork is a small home-based enterprise run by an artisan and his family in Laxmeshwar, Gadag District (Karnataka). Davalappa is a master craftsman and has spent a long time shaping his craft and creating items out of bullrush reed and leather.
Purpose
The aim of the brand is to help communities in Laxmeshwar, particularly women, by giving them knowledge and training about the craft, providing them with an opportunity to earn money and improve their lives.
People
Sahana Reed leads a team of 12 Laxmeshwar artisans, 10 of whom are women. Each artisan, including the four family members, is involved in the production of the products and uses a variety of techniques. Davalappa, the owner, manages raw material sourcing and, along with his other family members, oversees sample development and packing orders. Two artisans on the team work with leather to create products. Other artisans create items from bullrush and work with leather. And Kamala (Davalappa's wife) handles all of the sewing machine work, such as attaching lining, zippers, and others. The other artisans assist in cleaning and sorting the bullrush grass as well.
