Folkweave is a sustainable tribal enterprise that involves the whole family in the process of production to reduce the carbon footprint. The crafts are traditionally handmade and are the result of a self-reliant process that constantly revives the culture and preserves it in its purest form. It celebrates the gentle hands of dyers, weavers, and spinners.
Purpose
Folkweave's vision is to empower weavers and artisans belonging to tribal and other marginal communities to provide them with organized market space. They work with a process where artisans get a fair price for their creations that have an economic impact as well a cultural value.
People
Over the past years, tribal textiles of Odisha have witnessed harsh realities of time, economic, and identity challenges in the marketplace. These challenges brought to light the need to preserve the values and traditions of the community. Textiles are part of tribal life which has its distinction in terms of their uniqueness reflecting their cultural identity. Folkweave works with 22 woman artisans from Dongria kondhs community, who hail from Niyamgiri hill, they make traditional Hand Embroidered Shawls and scarves such as Kapdagonda. They have preserved their cultural ethos from modern lifestyle. The themes on their shawls and scarves are all derived from the nature they belong to. They identify themselves as Jharnia because they live in close conjunction with a perennial hill stream.

Having eight geographical indications in Orissa, the Folkweave team has been working towards preserving tribal heritage by bringing out handmade eco-friendly products that depict the weaving of the Tribal community of Orissa. The naturally dyed handlooms resonate with the spirit of sustainable living. They have started collaborating with artisans from the local embroidery communities to bring elegant handlooms to the customer.
