Sabrangi is the artisanal palette of colorful arts and crafts from the heart of Bihar. Their handcrafted products are an expression that manifest the revival of the forgotten skills of India’s rural artisans. At Sabrangi they teach, train, and upgrade the skills of rural women by incorporating contemporary designs with indigenous craft techniques, in an enabling environment. They mostly work with cotton to create distinct weaves and patterns, working towards a sustainable way of production. Sabrangi produces Handwoven Fabric, Sarees, Stoles, Accessories and Earthenware.
Purpose
The origin of Sabrangi is rooted in the idea of creating livelihoods for women from rural Bihar. The brand trains, handholds and works with local women on weaving, stitching and other crafts, ensuring that craft is a consistent, sustainable, fulfilling, and dignified form of livelihood. The three pillars of their approach are deep community engagement, enabling work environment and socially responsible design.
People
Sabrangi teaches, trains, and upgrades the skills of rural women by combining traditional indigenous craft techniques with modern designs. These first-generation women artisans are provided with training for progressive skill enhancement, not only to maximize their livelihood opportunities but also evolve as individual. The Sabrangi model is extremely special as the women work in 4–5 hour shifts, not having to compromise on their household duties. This is especially crucial in a rural set-up and often the deterrent to women stepping out of their homes for work. Sabrangi also initiates steps to facilitate access to educational programs, financial aid, health camps and linkages to government aided schemes. Social recognition, community acceptance and overall personality development of the artisans is paramount to the brand’s effort. Sarbangi is now home to 50 women artisans creating success stories in their everyday lives.
Planet
Sabrangi primarily works with cotton to produce simple, comfortable and timeless designs. They aim to create an integrated approach which starts with farming organic cotton and ends in hand produced fabric. Their process of producing handwoven fabric involves women in sizing, dyeing, bobbin-winding, denting-drafting, warping, weaving, tassel making, washing and ironing. Sarbangi is working towards a more sustainable way of production by reducing waste and using more eco-friendly methods (natural dyes, natural fibers and manual processes).
